phraseFantastic is a French language discovery and practice site designed to provide all the necessary resources you need to discover and practice making your sentences in French fantastic. It can be utilised by anyone who needs a place to get started with their language journey or anyone who wants to make sure they stay on top of their game because it asks the question "Are you practicing your French like you should?"

Where to start the journey

There's a certain freedom to learning a language, there is no one best way which is rather daunting when you want to start something, you always think there should be one best way and so you try and find it and the search always ends up fruitless so really the only way to go is to start with the basics.

Starting the grammar and vocabulary

It's nice to have a little structure when starting out with the basics, there are some online courses that will help you get a little instruction.

For a good grammar book I really like Easy French Step-by-Step (paid links) and English grammar for students of french (paid links).

You might also like the Cosmopolite series (paid links).

I think using a book and going through some video instructions is a great way to practice the language.

You might take a look at The Complete French Conjugation Course: Master the French Conjugation in One Book! (paid links) for working on the verbs.

Working on the vocabulary is essential and with The Complete French Vocabulary Course: Learn 5000 words in context - Including around 200 exercises, audios and video lessons (The Complete French Course ... Vocabulary, Expressions) (paid links) it should be easy.

Starting with pronunciation

For pronunciation I like Phonétique progressive du francais (paid links) and there's Sons et sens: La prononciation du français en contexte (paid links).

Listening comprehension

There's some online stories that you can use to work on the listening exercises.

Doing dictations is a great way to really concentrate and work on the listening comprehension.

And listening to a lot of dialogues en français can help with listening practice also.
